The Kite Runner Essay

Khaled Hosseini is the author of the novel “The Kite Runner”, the theme in his writing shows the guilt of redemption. To show this he uses symbolism, the narrative point of view of Amir and foreshadowing.

Paragraph 1

Symbolism in “The Kite Runner” is a main focus point which builds up the character of Amir. Hassan is Amir’s best friend and they hang out by a beautiful, nurturing pomegranate tree this symbolizes the strong friendship they have with each other. Amir appreciates his relationship with Hassan so much that “There was a pomegranate tree near the entrance of the cemetery. One summer day, I used one of Ali’s kitchen knives to carve our names on it: ‘ Amir and Hassan, The sultans of Kabul’. Those words made it formal: the tree was ours.” After what Amir witnesses about what happens to Hassan the tree loses meaning to the two of them. Amir feels so guilty he throws pomegranates at Hassan and wants him to throw pomegranates back at him. However, Hassan smashes a pomegranate against his own face, because of the amount of respect he has towards Amir. When Amir visits the pomegranate tree he notices that the tree no longer has any fruit attached to it. Although the names are still carved into the tree the fact that there is no fruit shows that the tree is dead and their friendship has ended with it.
